NTT Data Group, a unit of Japanese telecommunications company NTT, is in the final stage of talks to build a data center in Osaka Prefecture for U.S. AI developer Anthropic, according to a Tuesday, Oct. 13, report in the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, which cited several people familiar with the matter.
Construction could cost as much as 1 trillion yen, or about $6.3 billion, and the site would take in up to 500 megawatts of power, Reuters reported, summarizing the Nikkei story. The first part of the site could begin operating as early as 2028, and the two companies are aiming to sign an agreement by the end of Japan's fiscal 2026, which closes on March 31, according to Reuters.
It would be Anthropic's first dedicated facility in Japan. Nikkei said the campus would sit in the coastal area of southern Osaka Prefecture and would rank among the largest in the country by total power-receiving capacity.
NTT declined to comment, and NTT Group was not immediately available, Reuters said. DatacenterDynamics said neither company commented to Nikkei. Anthropic has not announced the project.
A second report
The Asahi Shimbun separately reported Tuesday, based on its own interviews with people involved, that NTT is in talks to build the Osaka facility for Anthropic. The newspaper put construction costs at roughly 1 trillion yen and said NTT Data is working toward a site on the Osaka coast with 500 megawatts of power-receiving capacity. Asahi said the project would likely be Anthropic's first data center base in Asia, and noted that the company opened its first Asia-Pacific office, in Tokyo, last fall and is seeking to build several data centers in the region.
Anthropic's compute buildout
Anthropic has signed deals for at least 14.8 gigawatts of computing capacity since October of last year, DatacenterDynamics reported. Those agreements cover both facilities and cloud capacity, with partners that include Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft, CoreWeave, AMD, Akamai, Lambda and SpaceX/xAI, along with a $50 billion partnership with AI cloud firm Fluidstack, according to the outlet. A large share of those projects are in the United States.
NTT Data runs more than 150 data centers in over 20 countries and regions, including sites in Tokyo and Osaka, DatacenterDynamics said, citing the company's website. The outlet also noted Anthropic's confidential June filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a stock market listing.
What's next
According to the reports, no agreement has been signed. The companies' target is to finalize one before March 31, 2027, with the first phase of the Osaka site coming online as early as 2028.
